IoBM and TG to empower youth through innovative agri-tech Initiatives

To address food demands of the future and challenges faced by Pakistan, the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) and Future AgriTech Pvt. Ltd. (a subsidiary of Tufail Group-TG) have collaborated to empower the youth of Pakistan in Food Science, Technology, and Security through research, training, education, and support for start-ups.

IoBM and TG has formed a strategic alliance to work on a project, “The Farm”. They will pursue academic and research activities on readily deployable sustainable systems to produce vegetables, fruits, and plants. The latest advancements in precision agriculture and vertical farming will be used. IoBM has provided 1,000 sq/yds of land on its campus to help TG develop a state-of-the-art Agri-Tech farm, research lab, and urban forest.

Mr. Bashir Janmohammad, Chancellor IoBM said that IoBM is entering into this partnership to fully support the nations’ future agriculture needs. Mr. Zubair Tufail, CEO Tufail Group, said that in the wake of food shortage and inflation, the idea of food security is the future for our communities that we must pursue. Mr. Talib Karim, President IoBM, said that this agri-tech lab is a CSR project and as a university IoBM will contribute in educating the youth and the community. Mr. Salman Tufail, Director, Tufail Group, viewed that this project will benefit the government through policymaking. Mr. Salman Mahmud, CEO, Future Agritech was confident that the youth can avail job opportunities in this field of study. Mr. Mazhar Kabir, Director Future Agritech said that this project will empower young women to join the agriculture landscape. Present on the occasion were IoBM’s Ms. Sabina Mohsin, Executive Director; Mr. Muhammad Sharif, BoG; Dr. Tariq Rahim Soomro, Rector, Prof. Dr. Shujaat Mubarik, Associate Dean CBM, Mr. Kamran Bilgrami, Head of Corporate Trainings, and Mr. Nabhan Karim, Head of Media Production.

IoBM holds hybrid Convocation; 1480 degrees conferred

The 23rd Convocation of IoBM was held in a hybrid format. This was done for the first time in IoBM’s history as it had to follow ‘Government’s Guidelines on Mass Gatherings during Covid-19’. Under the kind leadership of Mr. Talib Karim, President and amid the guidance of Ms. Sabina Mohsin, Executive Director, and Convener of Convocation Planning Committee (CPC), the CPC along with all relevant departments made necessary planning and special arrangements to conduct this year’s Convocation in the IoBM Auditorium (CBM Building). Among the departments that worked amid the guidance of the Executive Director were Registrar’s Office, Admissions, Academics, EMEC,  IT, Finance, Examination, Internship and Placement, General Administration, Marcom, Media, Student Affairs, Purchase, Housekeeping, Security, Maintenance. Special emphasis was given to telecast a continuous, smooth LIVE streaming of the event so the graduating students and their parents could become a part of it. The LIVE streaming, managed by the Media Department, IoBM, was flawless. It facilitated the graduating class to experience the Convocation from the comforts of their homes and offices.

The Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Karachi, held its 23rd Convocation (hybrid format) on Saturday, January 30, 2021. IoBM strictly followed ‘Government’s Guidelines on Mass Gatherings during Covid-19’. The 1480 graduates watched the ceremony via online streaming. These graduates are the Silver Jubilee Class of IoBM.

Governor Sindh, Mr. Imran Ismail was the Chief Guest. The Keynote Speaker was Mr. Muhammad Ali Tabba, CEO, Lucky Cement Limited. Present at the occasion were IoBM Chancellor, Mr. Bashir Janmohammad; Members of the Board of Governors; IoBM’s President Mr. Talib S. Karim; Executive Director Ms. Sabina Mohsin; Rector Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder; Deans, Heads of Academic Departments, members of the Convocation Committee, as well as the PhD and MPhil graduates, Gold Medalists for the year 2020.

The ceremony began with the recitation of the verses from the Holy Quran. The Tilawat was done by Hafiz S M Talha Kalia (MBA -Weekend – 2 Years). Huda Fatima (BBA Honors) presented the translation. The Durood Sharif was recited by Hafiz Ahraz Baig MBA – Evening – 3.5 Years).

The IoBM documentary was played with voice over of Mr. Ejaz Wasay, Head Media Studies & Sr. Fellow Marketing, IoBM. The LIVE commentary was rendered by Dr. Fareeda Ibad, Associate Professor & Senior Fellow, SSK Academic Writing Center, IoBM and Dr. Muhammad Asif Khan, Associate Professor, Communication and Languages, IoBM. Dr. Mehvish Saleem, Associate Professor and HoD, Communication and Languages, IoBM, was the Master of Ceremony.

During his Welcome Address, Mr. Bashir Janmohammad advised the graduates that those who remain devoted to their duty, follow a vision, are honest, and think about others, achieve success in life and career. Mr. Bashir further added that IoBM alumni should give back to their alma mater by becoming teachers and by adding value to its endowment fund. While sharing IoBM’s milestones achieved in 2019-20, President IoBM, Mr. Talib Karim shared IoBM’s swift adoption to Moodle LMS. He mentioned National Business Education Accreditation Council (NBEAC) recognizing CBM as a ‘W’ category business school, and IoBM receiving a Relevant Degree Awarding Institute (RDAI) from ICAP. He informed about IoBM Outreach Program’s success; setting up of Fab Lab; the active involvement of IoBM’s Alumni Association in various events; “Let’s Green Karachi” campaign initiated in collaboration with KMC; and the installation of a vertical farm on campus. He hoped that graduates of the IT era will have better career prospects and advised them to repay the love and devotion they received from their parents.

The Valedictorian, Sana Ahmed Alvi (BBA-Honors), received a Gold Medal for achieving the highest CGPA of 3.84. During her speech, she said that the IoBM experience instilled in graduates the attitude of making a difference. She viewed that adversity in success comes to those who manage change. The learning she and her fellow graduates acquired at IoBM has equipped them to adapt to change in life. Her advice for graduates was to strive for the welfare of others.

During his Keynote Address, Mr. Muhammad Ali Tabba advised the graduates to follow five keys to success: resolve, resilience, return, reimagination, and reform. He added that adaptability, speed, resilience will become the pre-requisite for success. He emphasized the needs of the sectors of manufacturing, agriculture, mining, tourism, export among others. He recommended that the graduates should develop a start-up based on a viable business idea.

During his speech, Governor Sindh, Mr. Imran Ismail said that it is reassuring to see that educational institutes in Pakistan, like IoBM – are offering quality education. Our students do not have to go abroad for higher studies. These institutes offer degrees that are globally recognized. While sharing points on Pakistan’s economic progress he mentioned that the inflation has reduced from 12.6% to 7.9%. FBR tax collection increased from Rs. 469 billion to Rs. 508 billion while exports grew from Rs. 1.99 billion to over Rs. 2.35 billion. Foreign remittances have been arranged at Rs. 2 billion and foreign reserves stand at Rs. 13 billion. Pakistan has achieved a surplus account after 17 years. He asked the graduates to trust their country as we are heading in the right direction. He added that the Prime Minister has faith in the youth of Pakistan and is offering them soft loans through the Kamyab Jawan Program. Under this initiative, the youth are receiving a start-up loan of Rs. 2.5 crore on soft terms. The Governor further advised that the youth does not need to worry about finding a job as they can become job creators.

The graduates received their degrees in business management and allied disciplines. Gold medals were awarded to 22 students. Among the graduating class were BBA-Honors (370), BS (365), BE Electrical Engineering (11), MBA-Regular (280), MS (13), MPhil (18), and PhD (8) candidates. This is IoBM’s largest graduating batch since the Institute’s inception in 1995. IoBM’s Convocation Planning Committee working under the leadership of Ms. Sabina Mohsin planned, organized, and executed all tasks with dedication. This was a team effort especially when the hybrid format added technical dimensions to ensure uninterrupted online streaming.

Late Shahjehan S. Karim’s legacy remembered

The Institute of Business Management (IoBM) commemorated the birthday of its Late Founder President Shahjehan S. Karim on September 22, 2020. This day also marks the 25th anniversary of IoBM. Mr. Talib Karim, President and Ms. Sabina Mohsin, Executive Director along with the management, faculty, and staff presented tributes to late Shahjehan S. Karim’s life, career, and his vision of excellence in imparting quality higher education in Pakistan. The speakers shared the values and principles as followed by the late Founder President that are cherished and pursued in letter and spirit by the IoBM family.

Speakers included Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder, Rector IoBM; Dr. Shahida Wizarat, Dean CESD; Dr. Fareeda Ibad, Associate Professor & Senior Fellow, SSK Academic Writing Center; Dr. Samra Javed, HoD ORIC and EMEC; Mr. Ejaz Wasay, HoD Media Studies and Sr. Fellow Marketing; Mr. Malik Barolia, Manager Salary and Compensation; Mr. Javed Ahmed, Senior Fellow, Innovation and Strategy; Mr. Nabhan Karim, HoD Media Productions; Mr. Khalid Bin Muhammad; Assistant Professor, CCSIS; Mr. Farooq Ahmed, Secretary to late Founder President and current President, and Mr. Arif Sheikh, Senior Maintenance Officer.

The speakers presented glowing tributes in memory of the late Founder President, Shahjehan S. Karim. They shared the late Founder President’s traits as a successful leader who served Pakistan in the civil services and later dedicated his life in establishing and building IoBM as a premier business school of Pakistan. The speakers touched upon the values and principles that the late Founder President followed and how his family and the IoBM family is pursuing the same ideals. During their speeches, the speakers shared such examples and incidents from the late Founder President’s life that highlighted his commitment to excellence, vision for a brighter Pakistan, and the dedication to continue working for IoBM until his last breath.

IoBM Career Fair attracts scores of students

As many as fifty leading national and multinational companies set up their stalls at the Career Fair organized by the International Cooperation, Placement and Alumni Department of the Institute of Business Management (IoBM). It was held on Thursday, January 23, 2020. The Career Fair was attended by hundreds of IoBM students enrolled in various degree programs. IoBM’s Mr. Talib Karim, President; Bashir Janmohammad, Chancellor along with HoDs, faculty and students attended this event.

Career Fair 2020 was especially beneficial for the final year students who are contemplating their career prospects. IoBM has been actively organizing such career fairs to bridge the gap between academia and industry. During the event, students filled forms to avail job and internship opportunities at the invited companies. The students also learned about their career road map. They networked with the human resource representatives of the companies to gain insights regarding the industry trends and job market with respect to their degree programs and specialization. Among the notable companies invited at this fair were Adamjee Life Assurance, Bank Al Habib, Beaconhouse School System, Dalda, HBL, Aga Khan University, Sanofi-Aventis to name a few.
